Job Summary:

Staff Engineers are technical leaders whose impact reaches beyond a single team. You are accountable for the technical direction of your product team and take the lead on architecture where the problems are hardest, the requirements are least defined, and the stakes are highest. You write code alongside your team and grow the engineers around you. You partner with Engineering and Product leadership so that what we build, who builds it, and why all stay in sync. You are the technical leader your development team works with day to day, and you turn to the Solutions Architects for coaching, guidance, and escalation

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Own the technical direction for your assigned development team and its product portfolio, including how work is broken down into technical tasks and implemented, consistent with the architectural implementations defined by the Solutions Architects.

  • Serve as your development team's primary technical leader, carrying architectural guidance into the team's day-to-day design and implementation work.

  • Define the technical vision for the systems and product teams you own, and get buy-in from Engineering leadership, Product Management, and other teams.

  • Drive technical strategy: build-vs-buy analysis and recommendations, platform investments, and major refactors.

  • Decide on technical quality standards for your product team, and elevate engineering practice through standards, tooling, and methodologies consistent with those set by the Solutions Architects.

  • Review and approve technical design drafts from developers in your product team, and resolve escalations about technical direction.

  • Stay hands-on: write production code, build prototypes, and personally take on the hardest problems in your product team.

  • Coach developers as a player-coach through code review, pairing, and design feedback, and give Engineering Managers technical feedback on individual developers’ growth.

  • Identify cross-system risks and opportunities, and raise architectural concerns to the Solutions Architects.

  • Represent technical feasibility and risk to leadership in strategic conversations.

  • Align with leadership on technical priorities, capacity, and individual development of developers within your product team.

  • Participate in hiring by evaluating candidates against the technical bar.

  • Lead incident response and ensure remediation is designed to prevent recurrence.

  • Weighs build-vs-buy, platform investment, and refactoring against business priorities.

  • Frames technical risk and feasibility in business terms for leadership.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Writes clear technical designs and RFCs, and coaches developers at every level.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.Track record of leading cross-system architecture.
  • Deep expertise designing and building cloud applications on AWS, including serverless and event-driven architectures.

  • Expert proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js.

  • Demonstrated technical influence beyond your own team, such as standards, tooling, or practices adopted by other teams.

  • Experience mentoring and coaching developers.

  • Experience with Claude Code, Copilot, or other agentic coding tools.

  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate (DVA-C02/DVA-C03) certification.
